![]() So let’s look at the translations for these cards: Jolteon Gold Star, Mew Gold Star and Latias Gold Star were all used in World Championship winning decks from 2006-2008. There were a lot of Gold Star cards that were not very good, but there were also many that were top tier and utilized in many different decks and strategies. Gold Stars were also limited to one Gold Star per deck, just like these new Sparkling Pokemon will be. They were also all basic cards (even Pokemon like Jolteon or Charizard) and they also featured shiny versions of their respective Pokemon. These new cards feel most similar to Gold Star Pokemon. There have been several game mechanics similar to this over the years, with varying levels of success. Both cards revealed are also basic Pokemon cards, which will likely continue with any other cards released under this mechanic, since Greninja is normally a Stage 2 Pokemon. Sparkling Pokemon are shiny Pokemon, and from the images we’ve seen, appear to have a unique crosshatch foil pattern. It feels odd to be writing about a new game mechanic before there has even been time to adequately test the new VSTAR mechanic. Let’s kick things off right away with this brand new game mechanic, Sparkling Pokemon. We of course still have Brilliant Stars releasing February 25th, and I will be reviewing that set here on Channel Fireball in the coming weeks. I love trying to figure out what other existing cards out there combine well with these new cards, and try to get a feel for exactly how these cards may fit into our meta! So I wanted to share my initial reactions to these cards, and how I feel they will fare in the competitive Pokemon TCG landscape!īefore we get too deep into this, it’s worth noting that it will likely be several months before we see these cards released in the western part of the world. ![]() Pokemon Japan revealed Battle Legion at the end of this past week, and these new cards have most players even more excited than Brilliant Stars already has them! Among the Pokemon revealed were the new Darkrai and Lucario VSTAR, a reprint to the ever popular Dark Patch item card, a powerful new “Pickaxe” item card and a brand new game mechanic called “Sparkling Pokemon!” Seeing new cards is always exciting, and it always gets my brain working right away. But surprisingly, that has not been the most talked about Pokemon TCG news recently! The brand new VSTAR game mechanic is a welcomed sight for many players, and it almost feels like a breath of fresh air and hope has been felt by all. ![]() If that’s the case, don’t be surprised if Azumarill goes top lane with an attacker in the near future. This is certainly an exciting time to be a fan of the Pokemon TCG! Brilliant Stars is set to release in just a few short weeks, and this set is jam packed full of incredibly strong competitive cards. However, many players see Azumarill more as a defender-type character. Where it should be played, it’s currently heavily used in the bottom tier. This means that even with a scope, Azumarill might not get critical hits when it needs them most. Unfortunately for Azumarill, most teamfights involve teams coming together and supporting each other. With this ability, it always crits when it hits a single target, but never crits when it targets multiple enemies. Whirlpool is arguably Azumarill’s best ability (Image via TiMi Studios)Īzumarill’s passive, Vast Power, can be a bit tricky to use. It then charges towards a target, dealing a solid amount of damage. Azumarill squirts three times during this move, giving itself (and its teammates if it has Buddy Barrier equipped) a shield. Perhaps the most positive aspect of Azumarill is its Unite move, Belly Bash. ![]() It probably wants to be somewhere on the front lines in teamfights, but other Pokemon like Snorlax and Slowbro will live much longer and offer more crowd control. Its defense only increases to 399 at level 15, which is much lower than Dragonite, which has 415 defense at level 15.Īs a result, Azumarill can be easily submerged. Unfortunately for Azumarill, it doesn’t have as much longevity as one might think. Whirlpool, Play Rough, and even Aqua Tail don’t deal the same damage as Duraludon and Cinderace. Unfortunately, it struggles to do damage. Many of Azumarill’s abilities focus on keeping the Pokémon healthy through team battles.
